Presided over one of most successful eras in Iowa athletic history and instrumental in procurement of funding for construction of athletic office building, eighteen hole finkbine golf course and clubhouse, football stadium press box and seating expansion, and varsity track; served as president of the state universities association from 1944, 45, 46, president of national association of state universities in 1953, 54, and chair of the american council on education in 1954, 55; member of the United States delegation to the united nations in 1959; and hancher auditorium named in his honor in 1972.
