Director and professor of physical education for forty years (1907-1947) and director of intercollegiate athletics for ten years (1937-47); father of intramural program in 1910; first head coach of gymnastics (1913,14), wrestling (1911-15, 21, including Big Ten Conference championship in 1915), tennis (1921-37), and coached baseball, cross country, football, swimming, and track; president of Western Intercollegiate Fencing, Gymnastics, and Wrestling Association in 1909, 10, 11; member of American Olympic Committee in 1936, NCAA gymnastics and wrestling committees (1930-47), and chairman of National AAU Wrestling Committee; and author of nationally recognized textbook “Handbook of Physical Education” in 1929.
