Coach of national championship teams at Yale in 1909 and USC in 1928, 31, 32, twenty-three first team all-Americans, seven Pacific Coast and two Big Ten Conference championships, and five Rose Bowl championships with career record of 194-64-21 (.733); coach at Iowa from 1916-23 with a record of 42-17-1 (.700), five first team all-Americans, two undefeated and untied teams in 1921, 22, and record of most consecutive victories in school history of twenty during 1920, 21, 22, 23 seasons; director of intercollegiate athletics at Iowa from 1918-23; member of National Football Foundation Hall of Fame in 1951; and charter member of Rose Bowl Hall of Fame in 1989.
