Olympic place winner (9th) in 3000 meter steeplechase at 1956 Melbourne Games; Olympic team member at 1960 Rome Games; NCAA cross country champion in 1955; AAU national champion in steeplechase (American record) in 1957, 58; Big Ten cross country champion in 1958; won seven Big Ten championship track titles in 1957, 58; and named Outstanding Amateur Athlete of Iowa in 1958.
