Administered one of most successful eras in Iowa’s athletic history; during his tenure, athletic teams won twelve NCAA championships and twenty-nine Big Ten Conference championships; directed construction of Carver-Hawkeye Arena, baseball stadium, football office complex, indoor practice facility and Kinnick Stadium expansion; only man to appear in Rose Bowl in five different capacities–player, assistant coach, head coach, assistant director of athletics, and director of athletics; member of College Football Hall of Fame and charter class of Rose Bowl Hall of Fame in 1989, and National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics Hall of Fame in 1997; and Elliott Drive and hawk sculpture at entrance to Iowa’s athletic complex named in his honor.
